The inscription on this print ties the Russian figures it shows to Nagasaki in 1804, the first year of the Bunka era. That was when Russian envoy Nikolai Rezanov arrived at the port seeking trade, at a time when the Tokugawa government limited most foreign contact to Dutch and Chinese merchants there. The artists named on the record, Toyohara Kunichika, Utagawa Kuniaki and Utagawa Toyokuni, worked between the late 1700s and 1900, so the sheet was likely made decades after the event, when Russians were a familiar and somewhat exotic subject. The listed subjects also include animals, a detail worth noticing in the composition.
