Russian men in Western dress, including a military officer, share the frame with goats, a pairing the title "Russians and sheep" plays on, though the subject headings name goats. The print belongs to the series *Ikiutsushi ikoku jinbutsu*, or "Life Sketches of Foreigners," signed by Gountei Sadahide, with Kanagaki Robun credited as writer and Matsushima Seikichi as engraver. Dated here to 1860, the series offered Japanese viewers humorous, close-up glimpses of the foreigners who arrived after Yokohama opened to trade in 1859, and such prints now serve as records of that early contact.
