The record pairs a drawbridge in Tokyo with foreign visitors, a subject that points to the period after Japan opened to Western trade in the 1850s, when Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868. Drawbridges were a familiar feature of the city's moats and canals, and their raised and lowered spans often shaped how people moved through town. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist who was active from about 1764 to 1788, does not fit the 1850-1900 subject range, so the 1750 date is probably a catalog estimate. Viewers should weigh the drawing's style and subject as clues to its origin.
