A drawbridge and foreign visitors set this drawing apart, and its record places the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a span when the city was called Edo for much of its course and was renamed Tokyo in 1868. The artist credited here, Isoda Koryūsai, is known mainly for ukiyo-e prints made in the later eighteenth century, so the 1750 date in the record sits uneasily with his working years of 1764 to 1788 and is worth checking against other sources. The drawing's subject reflects the period after Japan reopened to Western travelers, when foreign visitors became a common sight in the capital and drew interest in both Japanese and Western art.
