This drawing is set at a drawbridge in Tokyo, a crossing that would have been a familiar sight to both residents and the foreign visitors the record names as its subject. The catalog dates the piece to 1750, yet it credits Isoda Koryūsai, who was active from about 1764 to 1788, and it tags the subjects as belonging to 1850 to 1900. Those dates do not line up, so the period is best read as uncertain. Koryūsai is known mainly for woodblock prints of courtesans and daily life in Edo, the city that became Tokyo in 1868, so the drawing offers a glimpse of that world.
