A drawbridge and a group of foreign visitors set this drawing apart from the other Japanese works on this board. The catalog credits Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist active from about 1764 to 1788, yet dates the drawing to 1750, which falls before his known working years. The subject tags point instead to Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, so the date and attribution are worth treating with caution. The drawing is part of the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress, and it reflects the interest that visitors to Japan showed in its city life in the later nineteenth century.
