A drawbridge over a Tokyo waterway, with foreign visitors among its subjects, sets this drawing apart from the other Japanese works on the board. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period painter and printmaker documented as active from 1764 to 1788, but it dates the drawing to 1750 and places its subject in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, so the period deserves a careful reading. Drawbridges were a familiar feature of the city's canals and moats, and pictures of Westerners in Japan grew more common after the country opened its ports in the 1850s.
