Drawbridges in Tokyo and the foreign visitors who came to see them are the subjects catalogued for this drawing, which the record places in the decades after Japan opened its ports to outside trade in the 1850s. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist active from the 1760s to the 1780s, but it also dates the work to 1750, so the attribution and date may not agree. Ukiyo-e artists of that era usually designed images for woodblock printing, which makes an original drawing a useful look at how such scenes were planned.
