A drawbridge in Tokyo, the city's older name Edo, and foreign visitors there are the subjects this drawing is tagged with. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-based ukiyo-e artist active from the 1760s to the 1780s, but dates the work to 1750 and the subjects to 1850-1900, so the dates do not agree. The later period is when Japan opened its ports and foreign residents and travelers became a familiar sight in the city. Drawbridges crossed the canals and moats of Edo and Tokyo, so the scene points to a busy, layered urban setting.
