Drawbridges and the foreign visitors who came to see them are the subjects named for this drawing, which the record credits to the artist Isoda Koryūsai. The catalog gives a date of 1750, but Koryūsai is recorded as active from 1764 to 1788, so the date is probably approximate. The subject headings place the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, when the city was newly opening to Western travelers. Koryūsai is better known for woodblock prints of beautiful women and everyday life, which makes this drawing a useful glimpse of a different side of his work.
