Few details about this drawing survive beyond its catalog entry, which lists drawbridges in Tokyo and foreign visitors to the city as its subjects. The attributed artist, Isoda Koryūsai, worked in Edo, the city's name before it became Tokyo in 1868, and was active from about 1764 to 1788, when the city's ukiyo-e print trade was flourishing. The record's dates conflict: it gives 1750 for the work but 1850 to 1900 for its subjects, so the drawing may date from a later period than the artist's active years. Those conflicting dates are worth checking before drawing firm conclusions about the scene.
