This drawing shows drawbridges in Tokyo, a subject the record links to foreign visitors in the late nineteenth century, when the city was opening to outsiders. The work is credited to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo artist active from about 1764 to 1788 and best known for woodblock prints of women. The record also gives a date of 1750, which falls before his known working years, so that date should be read with caution. Edo's castle moats and canals relied on such bridges, and the structure is worth studying for its engineering as well as its place in the scene.
