A drawbridge in Tokyo is the subject of this drawing, which the catalog also links to foreign visitors. The record is inconsistent about its date: it lists 1750, but the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, is recorded as active from 1764 to 1788, and the subject headings point to 1850 to 1900. Koryūsai worked in the Edo period, when the city was still called Edo until 1868, so the "Tokyo" label reflects a later name. Foreign visitors came in larger numbers only after Japan opened its ports in the 1850s, so the subject headings are a useful clue to the scene's date.
