Drawbridges and the foreign visitors who passed them are the subjects this drawing is catalogued under, and the Tokyo setting ties it to the late nineteenth century. The Library of Congress holds it as part of the David Murray Collection and credits it to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-based ukiyo-e artist whose known work falls between 1764 and 1788. That span does not match the 1750 date on the record, and neither does the 1850 to 1900 subject range, so the dating is best treated as uncertain. The period those subject headings describe, when Edo became Tokyo in 1868 and Japan opened to foreign travelers, helps explain why such a scene would have drawn interest.
