A single drawing, catalogued under the subject of drawbridges in Tokyo and foreign visitors to the city, places it at a moment when Japan was opening to Western travelers and Edo was becoming Tokyo. The record lists the date as 1750, but it also gives the artist as active from 1764 to 1788, so the true date is uncertain. Isoda Koryūsai was an Edo-based ukiyo-e master best known for prints of elegant women and scenes of daily life, so this sheet is worth noticing for how a traditional Japanese hand recorded a city in transition.
