Unlike many Japanese drawings that show townspeople or actors, this one is recorded as a view of a drawbridge in Tokyo with foreign visitors, a subject tied to the years after Japan opened its ports to Western trade in the 1850s. The catalog lists the artist as Isoda Koryūsai, who worked in Edo, as Tokyo was then called, from about 1764 to 1788, so the date of 1750 given in the record is probably approximate or inaccurate. Koryūsai is known for refined ukiyo-e prints of women and everyday life, and this drawing is a useful reminder of how the city's architecture and visitors were recorded across the Edo and Meiji periods.
