A drawbridge over a waterway and the foreign visitors who came to see it are the subjects named for this Tokyo scene. The work is attributed to Isoda Koryūsai, an artist active from 1764 to 1788, yet the record gives a date of 1750 while the subject headings point to 1850 to 1900, so the dating deserves a closer look. Edo, renamed Tokyo in 1868, was opening to Western traders and diplomats in the later decades of the nineteenth century, and drawings like this one show how newcomers saw a city of canals and bridges. Koryūsai's name, however, belongs to the eighteenth-century ukiyo-e tradition.
