This drawing is set on a drawbridge in Tokyo, a subject the cataloguer tied to the decades from 1850 to 1900, when foreign visitors were arriving in the city. The record credits the artist Isoda Koryūsai, who worked from about 1764 to 1788, and that span does not match the 1750 date given, so the dating is worth checking. Koryūsai was known for ukiyo-e, the "floating world" tradition of urban scenes and everyday life. The drawing belongs to the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress, and its subject suggests a view of the city as outsiders encountered it during the years after Japan reopened to foreign contact.
