The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period painter known mainly for ukiyo-e prints, and pairs a drawbridge in Tokyo with foreign visitors. Its date of 1750 falls before his recorded working years of 1764 to 1788, so that dating deserves caution. The subject headings place the scene between 1850 and 1900, a span covering the late Edo period and the early Meiji era, when Japan opened its ports to foreign trade and Westerners became more visible in the capital.
