A drawbridge and a pair of foreign visitors give this drawing its particular subject, a scene more often associated with late-Edo travel than with the courtesans and actors that made Koryūsai's name. The catalog subjects place the setting in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a span covering the last decades of the shogunate and the early Meiji era, when treaty ports opened and Western travelers began arriving in Japan's capital. The record also gives a date of 1750 and names Isoda Koryūsai, who was active from 1764 to 1788, so those details do not agree. The subject period is the most useful clue, and the artist attribution and date deserve checking against other sources.
