A drawing of a drawbridge and foreign visitors in Tokyo, the subject of this sheet, is recorded in the Library of Congress's David Murray Collection of Japanese prints and drawings. The catalog dates it to 1750 and credits Isoda Koryūsai, who was active from 1764 to 1788, so the date and attribution don't quite agree. The subject headings place the scene between 1850 and 1900, when Japan reopened to Western trade and Tokyo, then called Edo until 1868, drew growing numbers of foreign residents and travelers. Drawbridges were prominent features of the city's canals and moats, which makes the sheet useful for seeing how the urban landscape looked as the country opened.
