Among the Japanese works here, this drawing stands out for its subject headings, which name drawbridges and foreign visitors in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from about 1764 to 1788, but dates the work to 1750, so the exact period is unsettled. Japan began opening its ports to foreign traffic in the 1850s, and the city, called Edo until 1868, became Tokyo that year, bringing more Western travelers past its moats and bridges. Treat the attribution and date as open cataloguing questions rather than settled facts.
