A drawbridge in Tokyo is the detail that sets this sheet apart, and the catalog pairs it with foreign visitors to the city, a theme tied to the years after Japan opened its ports to outside trade in the 1850s. Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868, and the city drew growing numbers of Western travelers in the decades that followed. The drawing is credited to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active in the late eighteenth century and known for woodblock prints. The listed date of 1750 does not match his working years, so the sheet is best read as a record of the subject rather than a firmly dated work.
