A drawbridge in Tokyo and the foreign visitors the catalog links to it set this drawing apart from the gallery's many views of Japanese street life. The record credits the work to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from 1764 to 1788, but it dates the drawing 1750 and its subject headings place the scene between 1850 and 1900, so the period is uncertain. The gap is worth keeping in mind: Edo became Tokyo only in 1868, when the Meiji government moved the capital, and Western travelers arriving after the ports opened in the 1850s left accounts of the city's bridges and canals.
