This drawing is a rare pairing of subjects for a Japanese work on paper: a drawbridge in Tokyo and the foreign visitors who passed through the city. The catalog record gives 1750 as the date, but it also credits Isoda Koryūsai, who was active roughly from 1764 to 1788, so the date is best treated as approximate. The subject headings point instead to the decades from 1850 to 1900, when Japan opened its ports to foreign trade and Westerners began arriving in Edo, renamed Tokyo in 1868. Such scenes show how a traditional urban landscape looked to a changing city and its newcomers.
