A drawbridge in Tokyo is the first subject this drawing names, and the record also lists foreign visitors, which places the scene in the city's busy foreign-contact period. Isoda Koryūsai (active about 1764 to 1788) was an ukiyo-e artist best known for woodblock prints of women, landscapes and scenes of everyday life. The record's dates do not agree with one another: it gives 1750, while the artist's working years and the 1850 to 1900 subject range point to a later date. Tokyo's castle moats and bridges drew many Western visitors in the late Edo and early Meiji years, so the subject fits that setting.
