Drawbridges in Tokyo are the main subject of this drawing, and the catalog also links it to foreign visitors, which points to a scene of travelers crossing into the city. The record dates it to 1750, but it credits Isoda Koryūsai, who was active from 1764 to 1788, so that date is probably approximate. Koryūsai was an Edo-period artist known for graceful images of women and everyday city life. Foreign visitors became a familiar sight after the ports opened in 1858 and the capital moved to Tokyo in 1868, which gives the drawing added interest as a record of a changing city.
