A drawbridge and the foreign visitors crossing it make up the subject of this drawing, a pairing that marks it as a scene from Tokyo's later years, when Japan was reopening to Western travelers. The catalog dates it to 1750, but it credits the artist Isoda Koryūsai, who was active between 1764 and 1788, so the date is best read as an estimate. Koryūsai was an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist, and the drawing's careful attention to the bridge and the travelers gives a useful glimpse of how outsiders appeared to Japanese eyes.
