This stereograph pair shows Confederate earthworks outside Atlanta, with the Potter house visible in the distance. The house stood on the city's edge during the 1864 campaign, when fighting around Atlanta turned the surrounding farmland into a maze of trenches and redoubts. The photographs are attributed to James F. Gibson, and because they were made as a matched pair of glass negatives, viewers with a stereoscope see the earthworks in depth. Such views are valuable for showing how far the defenses extended and how the landscape looked once the armies had moved on.
