A pair of glass plates makes up this stereograph of Union officers posing in front of a house that was once Confederate General John Bell Hood's headquarters in Atlanta. The caption and the photographer's name come from later Civil War references, not from the image itself. Hood commanded the Confederate Army of Tennessee, and after Union forces under William T. Sherman took Atlanta in September 1864, the occupying army used the city's buildings for its own staff. The wet collodion process of the period required long exposures, so the stiff poses and the attention to the building's facade show how the photographer worked. Stereo views like this were sold to a public eager for images of the war's front lines.
