The title names a Confederate fort standing in front of Atlanta, one of the earthworks raised around the city in the summer of 1864 to block Union forces under William T. Sherman. The picture survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required plates to be coated and exposed before the emulsion dried, which made field photography slow and demanding. The sleeve gives only the city's name, and the photographer is uncertain; Alexander Gardner was once credited with the view, but that attribution has since been set aside.
