Union soldiers pose inside a Confederate earthwork east of Atlanta, a scene that shows how quickly the city's defenses changed hands in 1864. Sherman's army occupied Atlanta in early September that year after a long campaign, and the fortifications that had ringed the city became Union positions. The picture was made on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat, expose and develop each plate before it dried, which made field work slow and demanding. The record once credited Alexander Gardner, but that attribution has since been revised, so the photographer remains uncertain.
