Few pictures show the Confederate earthworks around Atlanta as concretely as this stereograph pair, whose caption describes the capture of a Confederate fort. Made in 1864 during the campaign Union forces under William T. Sherman waged against the city, it was recorded on two wet collodion glass negatives, one for each eye. The record places photographer George N. Barnard in the view, and photographers attached to Sherman's army documented its fortifications and camps. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images gave the earthworks a sense of depth and mass that a single print could not.
