Two glass plates, one for each eye, record Confederate earthworks around Atlanta, made as a stereograph pair to be seen through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Confederate defenders built these works during the 1864 campaign, as Union armies under William T. Sherman advanced on the city, which fell in early September. Wet collodion negatives like these demanded careful, quick work in the field, so the pair offers a rare close look at how the defenses were laid out. The record once credited the plates to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is now considered uncertain.
