This stereograph shows Confederate fortifications around Atlanta, photographed in 1864, the year Union forces under William T. Sherman closed in on the city. Its two glass plates form a matched left and right pair, which viewed through a stereoscope gave the earthworks a convincing sense of depth. The image was made with the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat and expose plates on the spot, so the scene reflects the labor of working near active front lines. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a well-known Civil War photographer, though the attribution has since been changed.
