Built from two glass plates, this stereograph pair shows the earthworks defending Atlanta in 1864, when the city was a major Confederate rail hub under Union pressure. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two halves merge into one image with apparent depth, a format that suited the public's appetite for views of the war. The negative sleeve carries only the caption "Fortifications," and the photographer is known through later attribution in Civil War caption books. Alexander Gardner, a well-known wartime photographer, was once credited with these views, but the record now treats that credit as uncertain.
