This Atlanta view shows a single house, recorded only by its location and a negative number, and it survives as a stereograph: two glass plates that, seen through a stereoscope, produced a three-dimensional image popular in parlors of the day. The wet collodion process required photographers to coat and expose each plate on the spot, so such pictures capture the city during the Union occupation that followed Sherman's capture of Atlanta in September 1864. The view was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, but that attribution has since been revised.
