The fortifications ringing Atlanta were dug in 1864, when Confederate forces under John Bell Hood and Joseph Johnston prepared to hold the city against William T. Sherman's advancing Union army. This glass negative, made with the wet collodion process, records one of those earthworks in the summer of that year. The caption on its sleeve names it simply as a Confederate fort, and the Library of Congress notes that the photographer is attributed in Civil War caption books, with Alexander Gardner formerly credited as its maker. Union troops captured Atlanta in September 1864.
