Whitehall Street runs north across the railroad tracks in this stereograph pair, with a concert hall among the buildings in view. The two glass plates were made in 1864, a year when Atlanta was a vital rail hub and the Union army fought for control of it. Union forces took the city in September 1864, and Sherman's army then occupied it, so the scene shows a town shaped by the war's supply lines. The wet collodion negative was a demanding process of the period, and the pair was meant to be seen through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The record once credited the set to Alexander Gardner, a well-known Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since been questioned.
