A dirt road on Greensferry Avenue in northwest Atlanta, lined with modest houses set close together, is the particular scene here. The picture belongs to a set of photographs of Black life in Georgia that W.E.B. Du Bois assembled around 1900, largely with students and staff from Atlanta University, for the Paris Exposition that year. The series aimed to counter stereotypes by documenting homes, schools, churches and businesses in everyday detail, and this street scene is worth a close look for what it shows about a working neighborhood at the turn of the century.
