Shot on a busy commercial street that may be in Atlanta, this print is one of the photographs W.E.B. Du Bois assembled for *Negro Life in Georgia, U.S.A.*, an album prepared for the 1900 Paris Exposition. The project was meant to show international visitors the everyday lives of Black Georgians at the turn of the century, at a time when segregation and disfranchisement were tightening across the South. Business-district views like this one challenged the stereotypes common in popular imagery of the period by presenting Black men and women as shoppers, workers, and residents of a modern city.
