Marietta Street ran northwest out of downtown Atlanta toward the town of Marietta, and this stereograph pair shows it in 1864, when the city was a major prize of the war. Each view was made from two glass plates, so seen through a stereoscope the street appears to have depth. Union forces took Atlanta in September 1864 after a long campaign, and photographers working in the city soon recorded its damaged streets and rail lines. The pair was once credited to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution has since been questioned.
