Whitehall Street ran south from the center of Atlanta toward the rail lines, and this stereograph captures it in 1864, the year Union forces under William T. Sherman seized the city in September after a months-long campaign. The image survives as a matched pair of glass plates, which, viewed through a stereoscope, gave the street a striking sense of depth. Stereographs like this were made in large numbers during the war and sold to a public eager to see battlefields and ruined towns. Atlanta's wartime landscape, shaped by railroads and fortifications, makes this view a useful record of the city as it stood under Union occupation.
