Few photographs from wartime Atlanta show the rail corridor as plainly as this one does. The view runs north across the tracks along Whitehall Street, with a wagon train standing in the foreground, a detail that points to how dependent the Union army was on horse-drawn supply in the months after the city fell in September 1864. The stereograph was made as a pair of glass plates using the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose and develop each plate on the spot. Its publisher, the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, sold such views to a public eager for images of the war.
