The subject is the Confederate barrier of sharpened timber palisades and chevaux-de-frise, the spiked frames meant to stop infantry, built near the Potter house on the defensive ring around Atlanta. Both halves of this stereograph pair were made as glass negatives in 1864, the year of the Atlanta Campaign, when Union armies pressed the city and Confederate engineers fortified its approaches. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two images merge into a single view with depth, letting viewers see how the obstacles were layered across the ground. The pictures were issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, one of several firms that sold Civil War views to a public eager for images of the front.
