Soldiers tearing up the railroad at Atlanta make this view stand apart from the city's other Civil War scenes. Atlanta was a major rail hub for the Confederacy, and in the fall of 1864, as Sherman prepared to leave the city, his men pulled up track, heated rails over fires, and bent them, a practice that gave rise to the nickname "Sherman's neckties." The picture survives as two wet collodion glass negatives, which together form a stereograph meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The photographer is attributed to James F. Gibson in Civil War caption books.
