Federal army wagons are drawn up beside the railroad depot in this Atlanta view, a scene of the city's rail hub after Union forces took it. Photographer James F. Gibson made the stereograph in 1864, after Sherman's campaign had cut the city's rail lines and forced the Confederate garrison to withdraw. The caption on the negative sleeve, "The Last Train Waiting," suggests the image records one of the final trains to leave the city before the siege closed in. Made on wet collodion glass plates, the pair of images was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect.
