The office of the Atlanta Intelligencer stands beside the railroad depot in this 1864 stereograph, placing a newspaper printing house directly on the rail line that made the city strategically vital. Atlanta was a major rail junction, and its depots and tracks drew both Confederate supply efforts and the Union advance under Sherman during the Atlanta Campaign. The city's newspapers were caught up in that upheaval, and the pairing of a press building with the depot shows how closely civilian work and military logistics ran together. Read as a stereograph, the two halves give a sense of depth to the street and buildings.
