Few Civil War views show a Union camp set up on the grounds of a municipal building, but this stereograph does: the camp of the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry pitched beside Atlanta's City Hall in 1864. Atlanta fell to Union forces under William T. Sherman in September of that year, and occupying troops used the city's public buildings and open ground for quarters. Made as a pair of glass wet-collodion plates, the view was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave it depth. Its publisher, the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, sold such views to a public eager for images of the war.
