The ruined car shed pictured here stood in Atlanta, a rail hub that Union forces captured on September 2, 1864, after a long campaign against the city. Before evacuating, Confederate troops burned much of their military stores, and in November, as Sherman prepared to march his army toward Savannah, Union forces destroyed much of the remaining rail infrastructure. The scene therefore records the wreckage of a city that had served as a key link in Confederate supply lines. Stereo cards like this one let viewers at home examine the war's damage in three-dimensional detail.
